Wineries
Saint Charles County is home to one of the oldest wine growing regions in the state of Missouri commonly called the Augusta Wine Trail. Visitors can sample award-winning wines as they enjoy the picturesque rolling hills that abut the banks of Missouri River. If the weather is less than ideal the area’s wineries offer warm and inviting tasting rooms. Many of these locally produced wines are available at many of the area restaurants.
Bicycling In Saint Charles County
The main biking draw in Saint Charles County is the route along KATY Trail State Park that is a 225-mile recreation rail trail that runs from St. Charles near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to Clinton, which is about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City. The stretch through Saint Charles County begins in Frontier Park in the Historic District of Saint Charles and winds its way near the banks of the Missouri River into Augusta’s Wine Country. Saint Charles County Parks also feature trails, some paved and some more rugged. There are a number of establishments that cater to the biking community to help complete your experience.
Ferries of the Middle Mississippi River Valley
There are 6 ferries, 2 free and 4 toll, that cross the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in the Middle Mississippi River Valley. Two free ferries connect Jersey and Calhoun counties in Illinois. Two toll ferries connect Saint Charles County, Missouri with Jersey and Calhoun counties in Illinois. One ferry provides service between Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and Randolph County, Illinois and another connects Mississippi County, Missouri with Hickman, Kentucky.
Bird Watching
Although the area is best known as a winter haven for the Bald Eagle, the area is rich in diversity of birds with approximately 300 species having been sighted in the area. There are a number of premier bird watching sites in the area including Pere Marquette State Park, the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, Riverlands Environmental Demonstration, the Olin Nature Preserve and the Watershed Nature Center.
