The annual Bethalto Homecoming tradition began as a way to honor the soldiers returning from World War I. A maple tree was planted in the area for every soldier who returned from the war, and a picnic was held for residents to congregate and socialize. Over the years, the celebration of servicemen returning from duty has evolved into a weekend-long event for local residents and visitors.
