Located along the Mississippi River front in the circa 1886 Kendall Saloon building on Main Street, the New Madrid Historical Museum reflects the history of this river town from the prehistoric through the early 20th century. A variety of exhibits allows visitors to experience culture of this ever-changing river town. Native American artifacts and displays bring to life the Mississippian period of the area. The great earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 are well documented in the Museum's collections. Seismographic recordings on the premises give evidence of continuing activity along the New Madrid fault. The Civil War Room has letters, clothing, equipment, and weaponry of the period that are on display that Civil War enthusiasts will be particularly interested in. The Battle of Island No. 10 is presented from the viewpoint of a local historian. Many of these items were donated by local residents with family connections to the pieces. Late 19th and early 20th century life is depicted in the Museum's exhibits with typical furniture, clothing, tools, and utensils being displayed. The Museum's Gift Shop features souvenirs, T-shirts, books, games, toys, and many other items for young and old alike.
