The St. Louis Artists’ Guild is a regional center for artists and people who love art. The Guild formed in 1886 from the membership of the St. Louis Sketch Club, a group of male art students attending Washington University School of Art. The newly proposed art organization was a group committed to the idea of admitting women. After several meetings tackling the issues of gender, the St. Louis Artists’ Guild was born. The St. Louis Artists’ Guild was formed to develop a high standard of art appreciation; to promote and stimulate expression of its members and artists in the community; to present the work of artists and craftsmen through exhibitions, competitions, and lectures; and to encourage excellence and understanding not only of painting and photography but also other visual and performing arts. The Artists’ Guild has had many homes over the years. In 2015 the Artists’ Guild moved to its new facilities in the old Famous Barr building in downtown Clayton.

Today the Artists’ Guild is an extraordinary organization with almost 700 members whose mission remains: “To be a resource and advocate for creative expression, serving the Midwest as a center that exhibits, supports, and promotes the visual arts.” The Artists’ Guild holds primarily local and regional competitions with cash awards. It also hosts national exhibits and participates in collaborative and exchange exhibits with other art organizations. And, because of the limited opportunity for young artists to compete and exhibit work in a professional gallery, the Artists’ Guild holds the annual Young Artists’ Showcase for high school students with cash awards and scholarships. As a well-established network for all the artists in the metropolitan area, the Artists’ Guild is a communication center where artists can learn, share ideas, and test their talents among peers and professionals.

CURRENT EXHIBITS

Aspired Inspiration - Den Smith
Through July 6, 2024

Den Smith finds inspiration in nature and wonder and sees a cyclical relationship between inspiration and creation. In late 2022, he turned to mono printing to rejuvenate his creative process and eventually he integrated the techniques and aesthetics he had learned from mono printing into his paintings. He later revisited his earlier mono prints and found new inspiration.

Geologic - Elizabeth Claire Rose
Through July 6, 2024

Referencing her own experiences traveling through altitudinal zones to alpine areas, and across latitudinal lines, Elizabeth Claire Rose creates work which connects geographically disconnected landscapes focusing on their shared ecologies: how each site is connected through climatic shifts, soil qualities, and habitat range. She repetitively reworks traditional copperplate matrices, often in combination and collage with photo-lithography, and photography to extract observations, uncovering cultural and natural histories.

Impressions Unbound
Through July 6, 2024

Impressions Unbound aims to highlight current trends in contemporary American printmaking and shine a spotlight on a cross-section of artists working in a variety of traditional, alternative, and experimental print processes. This exhibit’s is Karen J Revis, an artist based in New York City.
