Though the City of Louisiana was established in 1818, explorers were in the area much earlier. The “Land of the Golden Hills,” as early French trappers called the region, brought pioneers and trade to this fertile and productive land. The Mississippi River first transported goods and settlers and later the railroads would bring industry and growth. History still guides the area today in the form of the Louisiana Area Historical Museum. Located in the Downtown Historic district among the Victorian architecture the Museum houses many artifacts that have been donated in displays that are constantly changing, providing fresh and new things for visitors to view.
Among the Museum’s collections are pictures of Louisiana from years gone by: the Arcade Building, the River Festival, the Champ Clark Bridge, the Louisiana river front, and the 1873 draw-span railroad bridge still in use today. Visitors can also see historic artifacts from the world renowned Stark Bros. Nurseries, known once as the “oldest in America and largest in the world” nursery business. The nursery, founded by the Stark family, has its own room with artifacts dating back to the days of Luther Burbank. Other rooms cover the industries of Louisiana including the Hercules Missouri Ordnance Works that was built during WWII along with its own “village” to house the employees. Other industries featured are the Nord-Buffum Pearl Button Co. and the Wells-Lamont-Smith Corporation which made gloves. The Museum has a variety of memorabilia on display including old toys, antique dolls, a collection of lady’s hats, a cast iron stove, military uniforms, and railroad artifacts.
