The annual Jersey County Historical Society Apple Festival traces its roots to the numerous apple orchards in the region, the role the apple has played in the development of Jersey County, and as a means to celebrate the annual fall harvest. This family oriented event has something for everyone - young and old alike.
Historical Tours
The Cheney Mansion
Built after the Civil War, the historical Cheney Mansion is the site of the Jersey County Historical Museum. Recently renovated, the Mansion features many original Cheney family artifacts as well as vintage clothing, furniture, toys, and other items of historical interest. Behind the Mansion is a Research Center, Gift Shop, the Flautt Addition which provides additional exhibit space, and the Union Forest Church.
Lone Star School
Built in 1877, the Lone Star School was moved to the Cheney Mansion grounds and restored as it originally was in the late 1800's by the Jersey County Historical Society, who realized the historical significance and the importance that one-room rural schoolhouses played in the County’s rural educational traditions. The school, furnished with desks and other items appropriate for one-room schools of the era, will be open for tours and will give visitors an insight of what it was like in school days past. Tours will also be given of the Union Forest Church, McAdams and Plummer cabins.
Festival Activities
Activities include live entertainment by musical groups, craft booths, demonstrations, a Quilt Raffle, and more. A kid's games area is open form 10 am - Noon and includes a bounce house, face painting, a treat walk, and a balloon artist. There is a $5 fee for kids to enter the kids area.
The festival features a nice selection of arts and crafts as well as a great selection of food. Filling entrees include the famous Pioneer Stew and Ham & Beans. Other great food that will be available to satisfy your sweet tooth includes pies, cakes, and plenty of locally grown apple products including apple desserts and fresh apple cider.
Times: 9 am - 5 pm
Free. Historical tours cost $5 per adult. Children under 6 are admitted free but must be accompanied by an adult.
