Bird Watching - Meeting of the Great Rivers Region

Although the area is best known as a winter haven for the Bald Eagle, the area is rich in diversity of birds with approximately 300 species having been sighted in the area. There are a number of premier bird watching sites in the area including Pere Marquette State Park, the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge, Riverlands Environmental Demonstration, the Olin Nature Preserve and the Watershed Nature Center.

Highland History Museum

Originally a stagecoach stop, this 1840s brick structure houses a museum operated by the Highland Historical Society and features historical items from Highland’s business community. The museum is open by appointment only with a minimum of 10 guests.

Louis Latzer Homestead

This turn of the 20th century home was built by Louis Latzer, often called “The Father of Pet Milk.” The home had many modern features of the day, including running, a gas light system, speaking tubes between many of the rooms, and one of the first telephones in the community. The site is also home to the Pet Milk Museum.

Calhoun County Visitors Center

The Calhoun County Visitors Center provides visitors free maps and information about Calhoun County such as Barn Quilt Trail, genealogy, location of orchards, and where to eat. The center also features small gift shop and a large exhibit of quilts made by local quilters and other exhibits featuring Calhoun County memorabilia.

Hamilton Primary School

When Dr. Silas Hamilton died in 1834, he left provisions in his will for the building and funding of a private school. This school became the first free integrated school in the United States. The school was originally built in 1835, and the present building was erected in 1873. A monument to Dr. Hamilton is located next to the school and is the only monument dedicated to a master by his slave.

Fulkerson Mansion

The Fulkerson Mansion, located north of Jerseyville, Illinois is rich in history and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The 14 room Southern-Style Mansion is virtually unchanged today and is furnished with antiques and artifacts of the period with a special display of Colonel Fulkerson’s personal Civil War items, LaFayette Baker’s Civil War artifacts.

Happy Trails Farm

Happy Trails Farm is a family owned small farm on 20 acres of land in Granite City Illinois established in 2007. They sell eggs, board horses, offer riding lessons, and rent ponies for children’s birthday parties. They also rescue animals, mainly horses through their large hoof animal rescue foundation. In spring, summer, and fall, they are open on most weekends with free admission.

This ferry takes vehicles across the Mississippi River between the small town of Golden Eagle in Calhoun County in Illinois and St. Charles County in Missouri. To reach the Golden Eagle Ferry from Pere Marquette State Park or Grafton, cross the Brussels Ferry and continue on County Road 1 until you see the signs directing you to the ferry.

Grafton Ferry

Located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, Grafton has been the quintessential river town since its founding in 1832. The Grafton Ferry is seasonal and is located on the Illinois side at the foot of Illinois Route 3. On the Missouri side, it terminates just off of Grafton Ferry Road alongside the St. Charles County Airport.

Brussels Free Ferry

Located about 1 mile west of Grafton and 4 miles east of Pere Marquette State Park, this ferry crosses the Illinois River linking Route 100 to Calhoun County and the village of Brussels. On busy days, such as weekends in the fall, there are two ferries operating to cut down on the waiting times.

The Yanda Log Cabin is a renovated 1850s log cabin built by blacksmith William Yanda. The cabin now serves as both a satellite addition of the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum to our museum and as a reminder of the Land of Goshen era.

Woodhenge

Woodhenge is the site of five different circles that were constructed by the Native Americans that occupied the site from 900-1100 C.E. to make astronomical sightings. Woodhenge is located west of Monk's Mound at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site where giant earthen mounds, the remains of a prehistoric Native American civilization, are preserved.
