The Touch of Nature Environmental Center's annual Maple Syrup Festival is your chance to engage all of your senses in experiencing winter. Dress warmly as most activities take place out of doors. The main focus will be on demonstrations on how maple syrup is made from collecting the sap to converting it into syrup. There will be tree identification hikes and skilled craftsmen will demonstrate hide tanning, woodworking, pottery making, basket weaving, silk embroidery and the making of natural soaps, candles, herbal products and more. Addison DeLisle, art and design research assistant and master’s student, along with other graduate students, will show how blacksmithing is done, and the SIU Forestry Club will present lumberjack competition activities. There will be special activities for children, live musical entertainment, and a variety of vendors.

A special treat is the pancake breakfast featuring syrup made on the property that will be served from 9 am - 1 pm. Kids ages 5 and under eat for free when accompanied by an adult. There is a fee for attending the breakfast and preregistration is required.
