Schmidt Art Center, Southwestern Illinois College
“Ubjects II” is an ongoing community history
exhibit that looks at ubjects, or unique and unusual objects. This
year, students interviewed people from Granite City, O’Fallon and
Troy about objects that connect their families to southwestern
Illinois. Also featured is the artwork of Edd Kueker of Waterloo who
uses discarded pencils to build historic models of log cabins from
Illinois, Missouri and Kansas. “The Colored Pencil”
highlights the artwork of eight different artists, each of them
using colored pencils in a different way. The artists include Bill
Amundson, The Art Guys, Edmund Bazan, Jennifer Maestre, Michelle
Oosterbaan, Dee Overly, Gil Rocha and Ranjini Venkatachari..

POPEYE'S
PICNIC

The annual Popeye's Picnic is always held the
first weekend following Labor Day. As always the event starts on Friday
afternoon and features plenty of food, music, dancing, sporting
events and other contests. A parade is held on Saturday morning and
a sizeable fireworks display is the finale on Sunday evening. The
event is centered around the downtown area of Chester, but
activities are held throughout the town.

APPLE FESTIVAL

This
festival sponsored by the Prairie du Rocher Chamber of Commerce
features Apple Butter making, an Apple Pie Baking Contest, a Quilt
Drawing, a petting zoo, and a refreshment stand with homemade Apple
Butter and other apple treats of all kinds for sale. The
Randolph County Historical Society will be on hand to conduct guided
tours of the Creole House, a 19th century home with French American
transitional architecture that is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.

An outdoor "musical rendezvous" where acoustic musicians
get together to jam with each other and play for the public.
Traditional bluegrass, old-time country, folk, blues, old time
river, and "ho-down" music. Jam sessions under every tree, kids arts and
crafts, and a professional sound system for the main stage (the porch of the 1740 Cahokia
Courthouse) for the enjoyment of all.
Food and drink are available for purchase, and there's
plenty of shade.

APPLE BUTTER
FESTIVAL

Maeystown Historic District
Friday: peeling of the apples at the Mill from 8
am – 1 pm.
Saturday: apple stirring at the Mill from 6 am – 3
pm.
Food
historians generally credit people of German descent for
introducing fruit butters to our country. This festival keeps
alive a tradition of cooking apples in a copper kettle, being
stirred almost constantly by a wooden paddle, until the apples
are turn into a smooth paste, which is then seasoned with spices
and put up into jars.
