Map to Biking Illinois Roads The Illinois Department of Transportation provides biking maps that that rate most public roads in the state. The rating system takes into account 1) traffic volume, including truck traffic, 2) lane widths, 3) width of paved shoulders and 4) road surface type and conditions. The above map shows the northwest area of the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway Area where there is a predominance of roads rated green (most suitable for biking) and yellow (caution advised.) In addition greatriverroad.com has provided grade ratings for many of these roads so the bicyclist has more information to plan an enjoyable trip that suits their experience level. The original map used was the ILLINOIS Official Bicycle Map: Southwestern Illinois Map 8 which covers Calhoun, Greene, Jersey, Madison, Bond, St. Clair, Washington, Monroe and Randolph counties.
