The Middle Mississippi River Valley is home to the second largest population of Bald Eagles in the continental United States. Various state agencies and parks, nature and other local organizations, and communities provide special programs and events to see our national symbol.

The World Bird Sanctuary will be bringing a live Bald Eagle for the public to view up close. Be sure to bring your camera. After this personal encounter you can pick up an official All Around Alton Eagle Watcher's Guide and set off along the Great River Road to see eagles in their natural habitat.

This annual event features spotting scopes, live Eagle education program by the World Bird Sanctuary, and Lewis & Clark reenactors. The annual Eagle Days event is made possible through a partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Department of Conservation and Trailnet.

Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area
Held in conjunction with the Chain of Rocks events this event provides an opportunity to view eagles from a different vantage point as they soar over the Confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The event is hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation and scopes will be set up to zoom in on an actual eagle’s nest and on these magnificent birds. There will be a warming tent set up.

EAGLE WATCH & TRAIL WALK

Fort Belle Fontaine Park
Spend a day with the Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park observing the bald eagles along the Missouri River. The World Bird Sanctuary will be on site from noon until 2 pm. A guided hike will be provided along the three-mile trail. Hikers and bikers are welcome to take the trek on their own throughout the day. Refreshments will be served. Be sure to dress for the weather and meet at the Grand Staircase.

Spotting scopes, naturalists, and bonfires for warmth will be available at Riverfront Park. Come early to watch the birds feed in the Mississippi River.
